THE TUNNEL NEST

• Most of the birds build nests out of twigs, leaves and other dry materials the kingfisher prefers to make its nest in the sandy banks of a river. It digs a tunnel , sometimes 0.8 metros long, that slopes slightly upwards under the sand.
• At the end of the tunnel it makes a circular chamber for the eggs.
• It might take a kingfisher as long as a week to build its nest depending on the looseness of the sand.
• Because it builds its nest right at the river’s bank, catching fish for the young remain with the parents for 25 to 27 days. Kingfishers pair for life and often return to the same nest year after year…
